Built by her belief: How my mother shaped my ambition

Authored by Nazia, a member of women world cup winning team of Kho Kho India

Delhi [India], May 16, 2025: That moment of pride when I knew the world was watching me but my eyes were searching for that one person without whom this would not have been possible- my mother, Zulekha Bibi, my unwavering pillar. Holding the Women Kho Kho World Cup trophy aloft, I knew this belongs to my mother as much as it belongs to me.

My journey as an athlete is a testament of my mother’s support and steadfast belief in my abilities. She went far beyond just encouragement- she became my confidant, my mental health trainer, my nutritionist and my biggest supporter. Coming from a nomadic community in Nagrota, Jammu, my journey into sports was not conventional.

From dealing with financial crisis to lack of infrastructure in the state to many questions on the merit of girls pursuing sports, my mother firmly stood by my side, established the foundation for me and gave me a perspective to look at sports as an endless opportunity. She often use to tell me “Kho Kho isn’t just a game- it teaches you life’s lessons- teamwork, resilience, strategic thinking, and the courage to chase.”

While my father worked hard to provide for our family, my mother made sure that I don’t stop chasing my dream. From waking up early in the morning to preparing nutritious food for me and encouraging me during my setbacks, I have no words explaining how my mother has impacted my journey and how I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.

I still remember tears rolling down her face and pride radiating from her eyes when I came back home as International champion. As much as she says she is proud of me, I am more proud and grateful to her. Her words of wisdom helped me nurture my mental resilience and propel me ahead when everything seemed bleak. She told me “Someday all your sweat will count”- and yes mother, it did.

I truly believe behind every achievement stands a mother who knows how to turn roadblocks into roadmaps and ordinary moments into extraordinary opportunities. As I hold this trophy, I dedicate my victory to my mother- you are the driving force behind all my success and silent shero of all my achievements. And as I continue to chase my dream, I know with you by my side, there is no limit to what I can achieve.

I would thank all mothers for standing by your child’s dream. We are what we are because of you! You are the foundation on which we champions are build!
