Teams with fewer wins qualify over team with more victories as rain washed Delhi Premier League 2025 creates playoff chaos

Delhi [India], August 29, 2025: The Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025 has thrown up a rare statistical anomaly where teams with fewer wins have qualified for the playoffs, while a side with more victories finds itself eliminated.

The New Delhi Tigers, who finished with 5 wins from 10 matches, missed out on the playoffs and ended 5th on the points table. Meanwhile, the West Delhi Lions and South Delhi Superstarz, who managed just 4 wins each, sneaked into the top four and secured playoff berths.

The reason? Relentless rain interruptions that plagued this season, washing out several matches and skewing the standings. Both Lions and Superstarz benefitted heavily from three No Results (NRs) each, gaining valuable points despite not taking the field.

How the Points Table Played Out

Central Delhi Kings (15 pts) and East Delhi Riders (14 pts) qualified comfortably.

West Delhi Lions (4 wins) (11 pts) and South Delhi Superstarz (4 wins) (11 pts) advanced despite winning fewer games.

New Delhi Tigers (5 wins) (10 pts), despite more wins (5), couldn’t progress because they had no washouts to add extra points.

This has sparked debate among fans and experts alike about the fairness of rain-hit tournaments, where weather can play as decisive a role as player performance.

The Tigers, however, will be remembered for finishing their season with a thrilling last-ball win over North Delhi Strikers, but their campaign ultimately fell victim to forces beyond their control.
