Gill, Bumrah return to India’s T20I set-up, BCCI announces squad for Asia Cup

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 19, 2025: India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was officially unveiled on Tuesday, with Suryakumar Yadav set to lead the team and Shubman Gill appointed as his deputy. The announcement was made during a press conference addressed by skipper Suryakumar and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, alongside BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

Suryakumar continues as captain of a formidable side that has been in outstanding form since its T20 World Cup triumph last year, winning 10 of 13 matches. Gill, who recently impressed as a leader during India’s Test tour of England, makes his return to T20Is in a leadership role.

India’s top order boasts depth and flair with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar, and Gill. Tilak has particularly shone at No. 3, scoring 443 runs in 13 T20Is at an average of 55.37 and a strike rate of nearly 170, including 2 centuries.

Samson, who has reinvented himself as an opener, comes in after a sensational run of three T20I centuries and a title-winning IPL campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he scored crucial runs in the final stages.

Notable omissions include Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom had excellent IPL 2025 campaigns. Jaiswal (559 runs at SR ~160) and Iyer (604 runs at SR 175.07) find themselves in the reserves, alongside Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Prasidh Krishna, and Dhruv Jurel. Krishna, in particular, stood out with 25 wickets to win the Purple Cap.

India will open their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on September 10 against the UAE in Dubai, followed by the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan on September 14, also in Dubai. Their final group-stage match is scheduled for September 19 against Oman in Abu Dhabi.

After the group stage, the tournament will move into the Super 4 phase from September 20 to 26. If India tops Group A, all their matches will be played in Dubai, while a second-place finish would mean one match in Abu Dhabi and the remaining in Dubai. The tournament will culminate with the final on September 28 in Dubai.

India’s squad for Asia Cup: Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh
